PHILADELPHIA – Women’s indoor track and field at the University of Pennsylvania kicks into full gear Saturday at the Penn State Open in State College, Pa. The one-day meet begins at 11 a.m. with the first women’s events starting at noon at Penn State’s Ashenfelter Track.

The Penn State Open will mark the first meet for the women since opening the 2008-09 campaign at the Bison Opener on Dec. 6. In that meet, senior Whitney Tagliavini won the long jump and junior Megan VanBuskirk won the triple jump. Tagliavini's winning effort of 5.65 meters (18 feet, 6 1/4 inches), qualified her for the ECAC Indoor Championships in March.

Senior Kinjal Parikh will be defending her 3,000-meter title after winning the event at the Penn State Open last season with a time of 10:11.20. Penn’s women were also victorious in the distance medley relay where they set the current meet record in 2008 at 11:32.61.

Ivy League rival Cornell will also be at the 15-team meet as will Boston College, Delaware, Duquesne, East Carolina, IUP, Lincoln, Lock Haven Morgan State, Pittsburgh, Robert Morris, Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. John's and West Virginia.

Results from the Penn State Open can be found on PennAthletics.com shortly after the conclusion of the meet. The final event, the women’s 1,600-meter relay, is scheduled for 6:45 p.m.
