PHILADELPHIA - Its officially track and field season again at the University of Pennsylvania. The women's team begins the seven-week sprint toward the Indoor Heptagonal Championships on Saturday with the NYRR College Saturday Night at the Armory in New York, N.Y.
The NYRR College Saturday Night at the Armory begins with the shot put at 6:30 p.m. The first running event begins at the same time with the 60 meters and the meet comes to an end with the 4x400-meter relay.
Penn's first meet of the 2011-12 season was just more than a month ago at Bucknell's Bison Opener. Sophomore Gabrielle Piper placed second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.92 and was the only member of the Red and Blue to reach the finals. She also placed sixth in the 60 meters at 7.82. In the 60 meters, six different Quakers qualified for the finals. Freshman Lydia Ali recorded the third-fastest time in school history. She finished as the runner-up with a time of 7.66. Ali also posted another second-place finish in the 200 meters. She ran to a finish of 25.80. Senior Catherine Okoukoni won the triple jump with a jump of 11.70 meters (38-04.75 ft.) and the long jump distancing 5.51 meters (18 feet, 1 inch).
On this same weekend last year, the Quakers opened the New Year with a first-place team finish at the Navy Invitational. Leslie Kovach won the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:51.27. Piper placed first in the 60-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 9.01 and placed second in the 60 meters with a new collegiate-best time of 7.80. In the 4x4000-meter relay, the Quakers junior foursome raced to a first-place finish of 3:53.77.
