PHILADELPHIA - After an impressive regular season, the University of Pennsylvania women's track and field team will be well represented at the ECAC Outdoor Championships. Nearly 30 Quakers qualified for the postseason meet and 22 will head to Weaver Stadium, May 11-13, in Princeton, N.J.
Events start on Friday with the heptathlon in the afternoon and the distance events shortly before sunset. Senior Corinne Rich will compete in the discus at 5:30 p.m. Saturday begins with juniors Jillian Hart and Davielle Brown in the pole vault at 11 a.m., and continues through the 4x400-meter relay at 2:20 p.m. The final day of competition starts at 10 a.m. for the Quakers with senior Kristen Judge in the high jump. The meet will conclude with the finals of the 4x400-meter relay at 3 p.m.
Last year at this meet, five individuals and one relay scored for Penn at Weaver Stadium. Then-sophomore Morgan Wheeler earned Penn's first point of the meet when she finished eighth in the javelin. Leslie Kovach was fourth in the 3,000 meters, Paige Madison was eighth in the 400-meter hurdles and the 4x800 relay team of Chelsea Delaney, Adriane McCray, Veronica Salcido and Laura Steel combined to finish seventh. In the 800 meters, where only four Quakers had ever broken 2:08 in the event, Victoria Strickland did so on two occassions and finished eighth. Of the 54 teams that scored, the Quakers were 25th with 13 points.
The Red and Blue are coming off an impressive weekend at the Outdoor Heptagonal Championships. Sophomore Gabrielle Piper earned first-team All-Ivy for the second time in her career, while senior Leah Brown earned second-team honors in two events and Madison garnered All-Ivy in the 400-meter hurdles. Piper won the Heptagonal championship in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.09, Brown was the runner-up in the 100 meters and 200 meters, and Madison finished second in the 400 hurdles.
