Wrestling Opens 2016-17 at Southeast Open

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team is set to begin the 2016-17 season on Sunday when the Quakers make their first trip to the Southeast Open in Roanoke, Va. Formerly known as the Hokie Open and hosted by Virginia Tech, the Southeast Open will feature two divisions of wrestling – an Open Division and a Freshmen/Sophomore Division.

Penn has 20 wrestlers entered in this weekend’s tournament:

The Quakers enter 2016-17 ranked No. 23 in the season’s first InterMat Tournament Rankings, one of five teams in the initial Tournament Rankings entered this weekend – No. 6 Virginia Tech, No. 17 North Carolina State, No. 19 North Carolina, and No. 21 Princeton will join the Red and Blue.

Penn has four wrestlers ranked inside InterMat’s Top 20 at their respective weights, led by returning All-American Casey Kent. The fourth-place finisher at 174 pounds at the NCAA Championships in March, Kent enters 2016 as the consensus No. 3 in his weight.

May Bethea returns at 157 pounds for the Quakers, looking to build on a season which included a win at the NCAA Championships as he enters the year ranked No. 16 at 157. Senior Caleb Richardson has qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of his first three seasons, and begins his final campaign ranked No. 17 at 133 pounds. Injury forced Frank Mattiace to miss a trip to his first national tournament last season, yet he enters 2016-17 ranked No. 17 at 197 pounds

A total of 29 ranked wrestlers are entered in this week’s tournament with Penn’s Kent the highest-ranked. Penn is tied for the most ranked wrestlers set to compete this weekend.

Mattiace may have the most interesting bracket in the tournament as six wrestlers ranked inside the InterMat Top-20 are entered. Joining Mattiace will be No. 9 Ryan Wolfe (Rider), No. 10 Scottie Boykin (Chattanooga), No. 13 Chip ness (North Carolina), No. 14 Kevin Beazley (Old Dominion), and No. 15 Rocco Caywood (Army West Point).
