PHILADELPHIA Penn wrestling Head Coach Zeke Jones has announced his Class of 2011. The six freshmen and a transfer will join the Quakers this winter.
Marty Borowsky (Harriton/Bala Cynwyd, Pa.), Jacob Hunter (Harrisonville/Harrisonville, Mo.), Zack Kemmerer (Upper Perkiomen/East Greenville, Pa.), Zachary Klinvex (Shady Side Academy/Allison Park, Pa.), Bryan Ortenzio (Cedar Cliff/Camp Hill, Pa.) and Tom Timothy (Brandon/Brandon, Fla.) will join as freshmen.
In addition, Scott Giffin (Eastern/Berlin, N.J.) will transfer from Michigan and have sophomore eligibility.
“We are proud to announce the Penn Wrestling Class of 2011,” said Jones. “This class will represent the future of Penn wrestling for the next several years. They are atalented group of wrestlers with tremendous academic backgrounds.”
Borowsky, projected to wrestle at 125 lbs., had a successful high school career at Harriton, culminating with a PIAA AA third-place finish this year. In addition to his high school career, Borowsky is an accomplished Greco-Roman competitor, and in 2006 placed second in Pennsylvania and sixth at the junior national championships.
Giffin had a solid season as a true freshman at Michigan in 2006-07, posting a 16-6 overall record. The 174-pounder competed in five tournaments, capturing the NWCA National Open and Edinboro Open titles. He also placed eighth at the Penn State Open and competed at Michigan State and Eastern Michigan. As a high schooler at Eastern, Giffin was New Jersey state champion at 160 lbs. in 2005 and was runner-up in 2006. A two-time FILA Cadet national champion, Giffin posted 131-12 prep record.
Hunter, a 149-pounder, is a two-time undefeated Missouri state champion. He qualified for the state tournament four times, and was also a standout soccer player at Harrisonville.
Kemmerer, a 141-pounder, is one of the nation’s most highly-touted recruits. The PIAA’s all-time wins leader with a 199-18 record, Kemmerer is a two-time PIAA AAA state champion. Kemmerer went an incredible 107-5 over his junior and senior seasons, won the Reno Tournament of Champions in 2006 and is a FILA Cadet champion. Recently, he placed second at the FILA Junior World Team Trials.
Klinvex, projected to compete at 157 or 165 pounds, finished fourth in this year’s PIAA AA tournament at 160 pounds. The Shady Side Academy graduate was also a member of the PWCA All-Academic Team.
Ortenzio, expected to be a 133-pounder, finished third at 135 lbs. in the PIAA AAA tournament after a District 3 title this year. His impressive senior season included winning the Powerade Tournament and a second-place finish at Reno. He was also named the Carlisle Sentinel Area Wrestler of the Year.
Timothy, a 157-pounder, won the Florida 160-pound title this year after finishing as runner-up last year. He helped his Brandon team to its sixth-consecutive state team title in 2007. Timothy was also a high school teammate of current Quaker Cesar Grajales.
