PHILADELPHIA – Entering his sixth season as head coach of Penn’s wrestling program, Rob Eiter has added eight grapplers to his squad for the 2013-14 season. The group has combined for seven state or national prep championships and 15 overall podium finishes at the state and national level.
“It is always an exciting time to announce a new class of recruits to join our program,” Eiter said. “We have worked hard to build on the storied tradition of Penn Wrestling with young men of sound character off the mat and strong ability on the mat. These eight student-athletes have bright futures and I am excited for them to join our team in the fall.”
The group hails from seven different states from all across the country. Two student-athletes will come to University City from New York while one each will enroll at Penn after outstanding high school careers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Michigan, Virginia and California.
“Penn is an elite institution – both academically and athletically – with not only a national but international reach,” said Eiter. “We pride ourselves on traveling the nation to bring in talent to our program and develop leaders on the mat and off.”
Three of Penn’s eight new wrestlers will come from the top two high school programs in the country. 197-pounder Frank Mattiace (2013) and lightweight Caleb Richardson (2011) are graduates of No. 1 Blair Academy in New Jersey, Richardson spending the last two seasons training at Olympic and Regional Training Centers before enrolling at Penn. Jeremy Schwartz, the lone Pennsylvania product in the class competed for No. 2 Wyoming Seminary after beginning his high school career at perennial Pennsylvania power Central Dauphin. In all, six of Penn’s eight newest additions wrestled for high schools ranked inside InterMat’s Top-50.
This group of eight will join a Penn squad which finished third at the EIWA Championships and second in the Ivy League after spending the last 13 weeks of 2012-13 ranked inside the Top-25 by the NWCA. The Quakers will return six placewinners from the 2013 EIWA Championships and five wrestlers who have competed at an NCAA Championships during their career.
