Wrestling Announces Recruiting Class of 2020

PHILADELPHIA – Fresh off its best finish at the NCAA Championships since 2006, the University of Pennsylvania is primed to add eight newcomers to its lineup for 2016-17.

The Quakers will add to all areas of the lineup, including the addition of a 2016 National Prep champion who is set to compete at 141 pounds and a former National Prep runner-up who will enter the lineup at 149 pounds.

Combined, this group has earned 16 trips to the podium at state championship meets and captured eight state or district championships at the team level.

The Red and Blue will add wrestlers from eight different states – Pennsylvania, Iowa, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Texas and New York – to the lineup for 2016-17. The pedigree of this group is without question, as the Quakers will be adding wrestlers who are graduating from some of the elite high school programs in the country in No. 2 Wyoming Seminary, No. 7 St. Edward, and No. 16 Carl Sandburg according to InterMat’s latest high school ranking.

“This is an exciting time for Penn Wrestling,” said Alex Tirapelle, third-year Roger Reina Head Coach of Wrestling. “We return an All-American and three NCAA qualifiers, and are strengthening the Pennsylvania RTC with the addition of gold medalist Brandon Slay as Executive Director. The opportunity to add these eight young men is something I am looking forward to. They have excelled on the mat throughout their young careers, and have shown a desire to be strong in the classroom as well. We want to be leaders in both among collegiate wrestling programs, and their high aspirations – both in wrestling and life – will help carry the torch for a new generation of Penn Wrestling.”
