LEWISBURG, Pa. – Penn completed a sweep of an EIWA weekend with a 24-13 win over Bucknell. With the win, the Quakers improve to 4-3 overall this season and 3-1 against EIWA opponents.
An undermanned Red and Blue squad with three starters out with injury won six of ten bouts, picking up bonus points in four of those wins. The big points came from freshman Ken Bade who picked up his first career dual meet pin, sticking Grim Gonzalez at 6:07 at 133 pounds.
That win gave Penn the lead, answering a major decision from Bucknell’s Paul Petrov at 125 pounds to start the dual. Bade was in control throughout the match, leading by a 12-0 margin at the time of the fall.
Jeff Canfora followed for the Quakers with bonus points of his own via a 12-4 major decision at 141 pounds. Matched up with Connor Lapressi, Canfora racked up five takedowns in the match, including two in the first period and two in the third. The win is Canfora’s sixth in seven matches.
For the second time in two matches, A.J. Murabito came up one point short of his first career dual meet win while stepping in for injured Andrew Lenzi, this time a 5-4 decision to Victor Lopez. After a scoreless first period, Murabito scored on a reversal , but was quickly countered by a reversal by Lopez. In the third period, it was another reversal from Lopez which gave him the lead. Murabito would tie the match on a penalty point following locked hands by Lope and an escape, but riding time was the difference.
Ray Bethea recorded three early takedowns in his 157-pound bout with Logan Kerrin, and used that early cushion to pick up his 14th win of the season, 9-5.
No. 17 Casey Kent would follow with a major decision, defeating Rustin Barrick, 9-1. Kent scored early in the first period, and rode Barrick out to build a considerable bank of riding time. Kent would add four more points in the second period on a takedown and two escapes, the second coming after injury time for Barrick. In the third, a takedown in the final 20 seconds secured the bonus points for Kent – his second bonus-point win of the weekend.
Zach Agostino was denied a weekend sweep via a 2-1 loss to Joey Krulock in a tiebreaker at 174 pounds, allowing the Bison to creep within seven points, 17-10, heading into the final three bouts.
No. 12 Lorenzo Thomas stuffed any chance of a comeback with a 16-2 major decision at 184 pounds. Thomas was dominant early, leading by a score of 5-0 after one period and 14-1 after two periods. Thomas now has 16 wins this season, 12 with bonus points.
Frank Mattiace knocked off EIWA placewinner, Tyler Lyster, 4-2, at 197 pounds for his 13th win of the season. Mattiace scored on a passby in the first period for his only takedown of the bout, adding escapes in the final two periods for the win.
At heavyweight, Joe Stolfi scored an 8-1 win over Steven Graziano, blowing open a close match with two third period takedowns.
The Quakers are back on the mat Jan. 26 in The Palestra against EIWA rival, Army, at 1 p.m.
