Wrestling Crowns Three Champions at Keystone

PHILADELPHIA - Three University of Pennsylvania wrestlers took home titles on home mats at the Keystone Classic, leading the Quakers to a third place finish as a team.

May Bethea, C.J. Cobb, and Lorenzo Thomas each were champions of their weight class as the Red and Blue improved from a 10th place finish last season.

Bethea’s win excited the home crowd as he defeated Rider’s Chad Walsh, 10-8, in a second period of sudden victory. Bethea scored the winning takedown after a second stalling call on Walsh – an NCAA qualifier – in the tiebreaker period extended the match. Bethea scored four takedowns in the match, three on double legs.

No. 11 Lorenzo Thomas defeated teammate Joe Heyob in the final, 8-7. The match was a tight as you would expect between teammates who train together every day. Heyob took the two-time NCAA qualifier to the brink, holding a lead late in the third before Thomas escaped and scored a takedown for his second Keystone Classic championship.

No. 7 C.J. Cobb had an entertaining run to the final, winning twice by pin – including a comeback from 8-1 down in the first period against Sacred Heart’s Jordan Velez in the second round. Cobb won the title, his second Keystone crown, with a 3-2 win over Eastern Michigan’s Nick Barber.

No. 16 Caleb Richardson was 3-2 to finish fourth. He lost to Drexel’s David Pearce, 2-1 via tiebreakers, in the semifinal and was defeated by Rider’s Robert Deutsch, 3-1 in overtime, in the third place match.

Freshman A.J. Vindici was fourth at 141 pounds in his first Palestra competition, posting a 3-2 record. His loss in the third place match came to No. 15 Richard Durso – a NCAA All-American at the weight.

Frank Mattiace took fourth place at 197 pounds, losing in the semifinals in overtime to No. 11 Anthony Abro (Eastern Michigan).

Brooks Martino was 3-2 at 157 pounds, reaching the semifinals before finishing in fifth place. His final bout resulted in a pin for Martino as he caught Appalachian State’s David Peters-Logue at 5:28.

Ryan Wosick made it three placewinners for Penn at 184 pounds with a sixth place finish. He was 3-3 in his first home competition, reaching the semifinals where he was defeated by his teammate, Joe Heyob.

The Quakers are off until the Nittany Lion Open in State College on December 6th.
