Wrestling Defeated by #12 Hofstra, 25-11

HEAMPSTEAD - Hofstra used seven wins, including five from its nationally ranked wrestlers to defeat Penn, 25-11, on Sunday.

The match started with a bout between two ranked wrestlers at 125 pounds. Penn's Rollie Peterkin, ranked seventh, wrestles Hofstra's Dave Tomasette, ranked 13th. The two met twice already at the Cliff Keen Nationals in Las Vegas earlier this season, with Peterkin winning both bouts.

The third time proved to be the charm for Tomasette as he scored a near fall early in the third period and then sealed the match with a takedown near the buzzer to secure a 8-2 win and to put the Pride in the lead.

Bryan Ortenzio took the sixth-ranked 133 pounder, Lou Ruggirello, the distance but couldn't come away with the win, falling 3-2. Ruggierello scored a takedown late in the second period and gained an escape point to start the third. Ortenzio got on the board with a takedown with less than 30 seconds remaining in the match, but could not complete the comeback.

At 141 pounds, Hofstra's Charles Griffin, ranked sixth in the nation, defeated Andrew Valenti via major decision, 15-6. Griffin took Valenti down six times and added two points for a reversal on his way to the win.

The Quakers got their first win of the day at 149 pounds as Cesar Grajales, ranked 14th in the country, defeated Jeff Rotella via a technical fall, 24-8. Grajales consistently was able to take down Rotella and added a three-point near fall in the third period.

At 157 pounds, Jonny Bonilla-Bowman defeated Rob Hitschler, 10-5. Hitschler was trailing entering the final period, but was able to close the gap to one point with 45 seconds left. Bonilla-Bowman scored a takedown towards the end to extend his lead and ensure the victory.

Trailing 13-5, Penn needed a win to get back in the match. Zack Shanaman did his part at 165 pounds as the 18th-ranked wrestler defeated Ryan Patrovich in a close bout, 4-2. Patrovich led after the first period, 2-0. Shanaman got on the board with an escape and took the lead with a takedown halfway through the second period. He controlled the third period, accumulating enough riding time to add the bonus point and win, 4-2.

The Red and Blue's comeback was halted in the next match as fifth-ranked Alton Lucas defeated Jeff Zannetti at 174 pounds, 5-3. A quick takedown early in the first gave Lucas the lead. He added a reversal early in the second period. Zannetti looked to be the fresher man late in the match, but was not able to score the late takedown and Lucas survived to add to Hofstra's lead.

19th-ranked Lior Zamir won his match at 184 pounds, defeating Justin Danz, 6-1. Leading 3-1 at the start of the third period, Zamir needed seven seconds to takedown Danz and extend his lead. He finished with 1:46 of riding time to close the match.

Joe Rovelli entered his match with Thomas Shovlin ranked eight in the country and lived up to his ranking, defeating Shovlin, 7-4. A takedown with two seconds left in the second period had Rovelli leading 5-0. Shovlin scored two takedowns early in the final frame to get back in the match but like Zannetti, could not come all the way back, ultimately losing the match.

In the final bout of the day, Trey McLean was pinned by Thomas Daddino at 3:26. With the bout tied, 2-2, Daddino started the second period on top and quickly had McLean on his back, scoring a near-fall before securing the pin.

After the match, head coach Zeke Jones felt that the score was not entirely reflective of how close the dual was.

"We were in a lot of those matches that ended up as point for the other guys," he said. "We didn't get off to the start we wanted with Rollie loss, and we just couldn't build momentum. Hofstra is a very good team, but so are we. We need to start winning these types of matches."

Penn will have a chance to do just that on February 2 when #21 Maryland and North Carolina travel to The Palestra for a pair of dual meets starting at 1 pm.
