COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Penn wrestling team got a pair of early wins, but lost the final six matches and dropped a 32-6 decision to No. 7 Maryland Friday nightat the Terrapins' Comcast Pavilion. With the loss, the Quakers fell to 2-2 in dual meets this season.
Penn's only wins came at 133, where Bryan Ortenzio earned a one-point decision over Mookie Golden, and 141 as Zack Kemmerer downed Matt Bogusz.
Several of Friday's matches were close affairs. After Penn forfeited at the 285-pound weight class, Mark Rappo was unable to defeat Maryland's James Knox at 125, falling, 7-4. Ortenzio and Kemmerer followed with their wins, cutting the Terps' lead to three points at 9-6, but that was it for the Quakers.
Jon Kohler earned a 10-3 victory over Troy Hernandez to get Maryland rolling, and it never stopped. Kyle John followed up with a major decision over Penn's Jake Hunter, 16-4, and then Gabriel Burak fell 12-7 to Josh Asper. In the night's most anticipated match, Penn's Scott Giffin -- ranked 18th this week in the Intermat national poll -- fell to No. 6 Mike Letts, 7-4, at the 174-pound weight class.
Corey Peltier earned a major decision for Maryland at 184, downing Harrison Cook, 9-0. The match concluded at 197,where freshman Micah Burak waspinned by Hudson Taylor.
Penn is off until December 29, when the Quakers travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take part in the two-day Southern Scuffle.
