PHILADELPHIA - The Penn wrestling team fell to No. 18 (Intermat)/No. 24 (Coaches) Virginia, 28-9, Sunday afternoon at The Palestra, falling to 4-3 on the season while the nationally-ranked Cavaliers improved to 12-3.
Virginia's Ross Gitomer gave the Cavaliers the early lead with a 6-5 win over sophomore Mark Rappo, but junior Bryan Ortenzio tied the match with a 7-1 decision over Matt Cubillos.
At 141, junior Zack Kemmerer fell to Virginia's Derek Valenti, 8-2, and when freshman Troy Hernandez, wrestling at 149, was taken down at 4:43 by Kellon Balum, the Cavaliers led 12-3. Penn then forfeited at 157 before Tom Timothy, wrestling at 165, defeated Beau Fisher, 5-4.
Penn's only other victory came after junior Scott Giffin lost in overtime, 8-6, and freshman Harrison Cook suffered an 11-3 defeat. Freshman Micah Burak then handled Virginia's Brent Jones at 197, winning 7-1.
To finish the match, senior Tyler Blakely lost as the buzzer sounded to Jack Danilkowicz. Danilkowicz recorded a takedown as time expired in the third period to defeat Blakely, 4-3.
The Quakers return to action next Saturday, when they travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Pitt Panthers. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
