Wrestling Finishes First Day in Vegas

Updated Bracket

LAS VEGAS - The Penn wrestling team hascompleted the first day of competitionat the Cliff Keen Invitational, being held Friday and Saturday at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Four Quakers are still eligible to place heading into Saturday's action, led by 125-pounder Rollie Peterkin who has advanced to the semifinal round in his weight class. Peterkin, the sixth seed in this event, gained his semifinal berth with a 9-5 win over Hofstra's Dave Tomasette, the third seed. Saturday morning, he will face Stanford's Tanner Gardner, the second seed.

"Rollie really had a great day," said third-year head coach Zeke Jones. "He seems to be on track, especially in the quarterfinal match when he handled Tomasette. However, nothing is accomplished until this tournament is complete, so he has two more big matches ahead of him."

Zack Shanaman was the sixth seed at 165, but lost in the second round. However, hehas won four times in the consolation bracket and remains alive for placement. He will face Arizona State's Patrick Pitsch, the No. 2 seed,in a consolation quarterfinal Saturday.

At 174, Scott Giffin was the 12th seed and advanced to the third round before losing. However, he has won twice in the consolation round and will wrestle Edinboro's Phil Moricone Saturday morning.

Lior Zamir, meanwhile, can still live up to his No. 8 seeding Saturday. He fell in the third round to No. 9 seed Doug Umbehauer of Rider, but won twice in the consolation bracket Friday night and will face Ian Murphy of Cal State-Fullerton Saturday morning. Zamir was impressive in victory Friday; he won three times by fall, and his other victory came on a major decision, 18-5.

"Lior lost a tough match to a guy he is familiar with, but he bounced back and got some nice wins," said Jones. "Scott Giffin has that look right now, he is wrestling like he wants to be our guy at 174."

As a team, Penn is 10th in the standings right now with 44 points, tops among the EIWA schools competing in this event and just ahead of 11th-place Navy. Ohio State leads the team race with 82 points, followed by Missouri (77.5) and Michigan (71.5).

"We have gotten a lot of feedback this weekend," said Jones. "Now we know what we need to go back and work on, so that we can improve for March and NCAAs. Our goal is to become the most improved team between now and then."
