EVANSTON, ILL. – Wrestling is complete for the Penn contingent at the 2008 Midlands Championships, and sophomore Scott Giffin was the last Quaker standing as he advanced to the Round of 12 at the prestigious event hosted by Northwestern University.
Giffin, competing at 174 pounds, earned a marquee win in the wrestlebacks, defeating No. 8 seed Trevor Perry of Indiana, 4-2, to advance to the Round of 12. Perry was ranked No. 12 in the latest InterMat polls. In the Round of 12, Giffin was defeated by Olivet’s Kyle Vanderhyde, 6-2.
Earlier in the day, Giffin bested Central Michigan’s Ben Bennett, 3-1. He ended the tournament with a 4-2 record in his first competition of the season.
Gabriel Burak also competed for Penn at Midlands, finishing with a 1-2 record including a pinfall win over Iowa’s Stu Gilmore in a pigtail bout to start the tournament.
Penn is back in action on Saturday with four duals against East Stroudsburg, Franklin & Marshall, Delaware State and Gloucester starting at noon.
