C.J. Cobb continued his climb into the discussion regarding top wrestlers at 141 pounds this season, upsetting the seventh-seeded - and national No. 8 Zach Neibert, 3-2, as part of a run to the quarterfinals at the 50th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships held by Northwestern University.

Cobb was workmanlike in his first two bouts, defeated Nick Lawrence of Purdue, 3-1, scoring the decisive takedown in the second period to advance. In the second round, Cobb took on Virginia Tech’s Neibert, coming from behind with three points in the third period for a 3-2 win. After escaping quickly in the third, Cobb scored the winning takedown with one minute left to defeat his highest-ranked opponent to date. In the Quarterfinals, Cobb met second-seeded Devin Carter from Virginia Tech. A redshirt this season, Carter won Midlands in 2011 at 133 pounds and earned All-American honors at133 last season. Cobb quickly found out what Carter had to offer, conceding three takedowns in the first period. Cobb was able to quickly escape after each of those takedowns, and turned his three-point deficit to just one after a takedown in the second period. Carter escaped to start the third, and Cobb was unable to tie the match to move out of the championship bracket via an 8-6 decision.

Casey Kent rattled off three wins in wrestlebacks after losing in the first round to finish his tournament with a 3-2 record, but was eliminated after a 6-3 loss to Nebraska’s Austin Wilson. The highlight for Kent was a 9-0 major decision over Columbia’s Josh Houldsworth. After a scoreless first period, Kent escaped and then added a takedown and three backpoints to build a big lead in the middle frame. A takedown with 55 seconds remaining and riding time locked up the major decision.

Andrew Lenzi was also 3-2 for Penn in the tournament, winning twice in the championship bracket before losing to top-seeded Montell Marion in the second round. Lenzi’s first two wins came against opponents from Iowa State and Stanford, giving him momentum heading into upcoming duals with those schools.

The Red and Blue head to the west coast next, taking on Stanford and Arizona State in Palo Alto on Jan. 6.
