Wrestling Goes 2-1 at Northeast Duals

TROY, N.Y. - The Penn wrestling team went 2-1 at the Northeast Duals, held Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College. The Quakers easily defeated Sacred Heart to open the day, 46-9, then followed that up with a 22-12 decision over Appalachian State. Penn looked like it might control its dual with Michigan, as well, but the Wolverines won the last three matches to gain a 19-12 victory.

The duals were Penn's first of the season, after competing in a pair of early-season tournaments.

In Saturday's first match, against Sacred Heart, Penn won four weight classes by forfeit and took three other decisions by fall -- Bryan Ortenzio at 133, Gabriel Burak at 165, and Scott Giffin at 174.

Penn's second match, with Appalachian State, was a little more of a struggle. Mark Rappo put Penn up early with a major decision over Tony Gravely, but ASU got three of those points back with a win at 133. Zack Kemmerer and Troy Hernandez upped Penn's lead with wins at 141 and 149, before ASU got a win at 157. Burak, Giffin and Harrison Cook put the match away with wins at 165, 174 and 184, and Micah Burak capped off the win with a 6-3 decision at 197.

The Penn-Michigan match went back and forth through the first six weight classes, as Rappo, Kemmerer and Gabe Burak all won by decision -- Burak defeating the 19th-ranked wrestler in his weight class, Aaron Hynes -- while Dan White, Hernandez and Jake Hunter all lost by decision.Giffin briefly broke the tie, defeating Michigan's Justin Zeerip to put Penn up, 12-9. However, UM's Erich Smith gave the Wolverines a lead they wouldn't relinquish with an 11-2 major decision over Cook. In the penultimate match, Micah Burak did all he could to get Penn back ahead at 197 but fell 1-0 to the nation's 14th-ranked wrestler at that weight class, Anthony Biondo. Eddie Phillips then wrapped it up for Michigan with a 10-3 decision over Tyler Blakely at 285.

Gabe Burak and Giffin were the lone Penn wrestler to go 3-0 on the day, Burak's performance highlighted by his win over Hynes. Both Rappo and Kemmerer were 2-0 after opening the day with forfeit wins.

Penn returns to action next Sunday, Dec. 6, when the Quakers travel to State College to participate in the Penn State Open.
