Wrestling Has Big Plans for Valentine's Weekend

PHILADELPHIA – The Palestra will be the “House of Wrestling” one more time for the 2015-16 season as the University of Pennsylvania wrestling team is home for three duals over Valentine’s Day weekend. The Quakers begin the weekend with a true test, hosting No. 15 Cornell on Saturday at 1 p.m. On Sunday, the Red and Blue host Columbia (1 p.m.) and Bucknell (3 p.m.) as part of Senior Day.

Saturday’s dual with Cornell will be broadcast on both the Ivy League Digital Network and ESPN3. On Sunday, fans can watch the dual meets with the Lions and Bison on ILDN.

Setting The Stage …

The final weekend of Ivy League completion has the Quakers in range of 12th Ivy title. There is work to be done, for sure, and the Quakers will need some help but a pair of Ivy wins could lead to a banner being raised. Cornell and Princeton are each 3-0 in Ivy duals this season, while Penn enters are 2-1. With the Big Red taking on both the Quakers and Tigers, and both Penn and Princeton also wrestling Columbia this weekend, there’s a lot still to be determined.

One-on-One Battles to Watch …

Individually, there are plenty of juicy matchups looming this weekend. Of course, all eyes will be on 184 pounds when Penn takes on Cornell. The Big Red are likely to line up Gabe Dean – the defending national champion and No. 1-ranked wrestler in the country. Dean is coming off a last weekend to Oklahoma State’s Nolan Boyd – a wrestler Lorenzo Thomas pinned earlier this season. That loss was the first in 52 matches for Dean. Thomas enters the weekend ranked No. 15 and looking to turn the tides on an 0-6 record all-time against Dean.

Another match to watch for against the Big Red will be at 174 pounds. At the Southern Scuffle, Casey Kent defeated Brian Realbuto who entered the tournament ranked No. 1 in the country. Expect another close match with major impact on the team score as those two battle for the top seed at EIWAs.

The major matchups are not limited to Saturday. On Sunday, a Columbia team looking to cement its status as a team to watch at EIWAs will enter The Palestra. While no Lions are currently in Intermat’s Top-20, Markus Scheidel is knocking on the door at 157. He enters the weekend with a 31-7 record and wins in 11 of his last 12 matches. Scheidel and May Bethea have not met previously, and the winner could crack the Top-20 next week. At 133 pounds, Caleb Richardson and Angelo Amenta will meet for the fourth time. Richardson is 2-1 against Amenta, but the win for Amenta came at EIWAs last season via a 6-4 decision.

Penn will wrap up the weekend with a Bucknell squad which has won four of its last five duals and has three wrestlers in Intermat’s Top-20. Casey Kent will have another test awaiting him in No. 20 Rustin Barrick who enters the weekend with a 21-6 record and a perfect 12-0 mark in dual meets. At 149 pounds, C.J. Cobb will have a chance to avenge a 3-2 loss to Victor Lopez at last year’s EIWA Championships.

Sending Out the Seniors ...On Sunday, the Penn Wrestling program will honor the five graduating seniors from the Class of 2016. Between the Columbia and Bucknell duals, Ray Bethea, C.J. Cobb, Eric Friedman, A.J. Murabito and Lorenzo Thomas will each be recognized for their efforts to further the Penn Wrestling tradition.
