Wrestling Has Four Named NWCA All-Academic

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team was recently honored by the National Wrestling Coaches Association for its work in the classroom during the NWCA’s yearly academic awards announcement.

The Quakers were one of 30 programs named Division I All-Academic Teams for 2014-15, ranked No. 18 overall with a team GPA of 3.145. The Red and Blue were one of 10 newcomers to the Top-30 this year, the third-highest ranked team to make the jump into the rankings this season. The EIWA had eight programs included in the Top-30, most of any Division I wrestling conference.

Penn had four wrestlers named NWCA Division I All-Academic as individuals this season, tied for third among all Division I programs. C.J. Cobb, Brooks Martino. Caleb Richardson and Brad Wukie were named All-Academic by the NWCA for their work on and off the mat this season. The Quakers tied with Brown and Lehigh for the most individual NWCA All-Academic selections. These four student-athletes are Penn’s first NWCA All-Academic individuals since Erich Smith earned the honor in 2012 – the last time Penn was also honored as a team.

Cobb, Martino, and Richardson were all NCAA Championships qualifiers for the Quakers last season and returns to the mats for Penn in 2015-16. They will be joined by Lorenzo Thomas, an All-American in 2014 and two-time NCAA qualifier, and Casey Kent, a NCAA qualifier in 2014 who missed all of last season with injury.
