Wrestling Has Six Compete at Shorty Hitchcock

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Penn sent a contingent of wrestlers to the Shorty Hitchcock Open at Millersville University and three reached the semifinals before bowing out in the consolation rounds.

At 141 pounds, Marty Borowsky advanced to the semis with a pair of wins at 141 pounds. In the first round he defeated Nassau’s Peter McAtte via tech fall, 17-0 at 2:49. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Maryland’s Matt Bogusz in sudden victory, 7-5. Borowsky then fell in the semifinals to Army’s Casey Smith via pinfall at 6:04.

Brett McCurdy competed at 149 pounds for Penn and went 3-2 on the day, advancing to the semifinals. He defeated Jeff Steele from Cumberlands in the first round, 4-0, before earning an 8-6 win over Virginia Tech’s Nick Murray. In the quarterfinals, McCurdy defeated Army’s Kirk Landon, via major decision, 8-0. In the semifinals, McCurdy was defeated, 5-3, by Nassau’s Bobby Ward.

Gabriel Burak was the third Penn wrestler to advance to the semifinals, doing so at 157 pounds with a 3-2 record at the tournament. In his opening round match, he scored an 8-0 major decision over Ville’s J.J. Lester. In the next round, he won, 6-2, over Shippensburg’s David Sunderland. In the quarterfinals, Burak earned an 8-4 decision win over Kutztown’s Chris Chambers. The semifinals saw Burak defeated by Binghamton’s Nate Patterson, 6-0.

Mark Rappo and Zack Ellis competed at 125 pounds for Penn, with neither man advancing past the quarterfinals. Rappo went 2-2 and Ellis was 0-2 on the day. T.J. Polacek was 1-2 at 157 pounds.
