Wrestling Has Six Place at Nittany Lion Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – 184 pounds continues to be a strong weight class for the University of Pennsylvania wrestling team, as No. 10 Lorenzo Thomas (second) and Joe Heyob (third) both placed at the Nittany Lion Open to lead a group of six placewinners for the Quakers in their final completion of the fall semester.

Thomas finished the day with a 4-0 record, including two major decisions and a technical fall, but a day-long battle with illness came to a head before the championship final and he was forced to withdraw. His biggest win of the day was against Penn State’s Kellan Stout, a 10-2 major decision in the semifinals.

Heyob was 4-1 to finish third, defeating Stout by an 8-5 decision in the third place match.

After missing the Keystone Classic with injury, Casey Kent returned with a vengeance, posting a 5-1 record to finish third at 174 pounds. Kent racked up bonus points throughout the tournament with two major decisions, a technical fall and a pin. His only loss was a 6-3 decision to Myles Martin of Ohio State.

Caleb Richardson was fourth at 133 pounds, posting a 3-2 record. His first loss of the day came to national No. 8 Jordan Conaway of Penn State in the semifinals, 6-1. Richardson bounced back to defeat Lehigh’s Scott Parker, 5-3, before a 3-1 loss to Scott Delvecchio resulted in a fourth-place finish.

May Bethea also took fourth place, going 5-2 in the tournament. Both of his losses were to NCAA qualifier Zach Beitz of Penn State.

The final placewinner for Penn was Frank Mattiace who took fifth at 197 pounds. Mattiace was 5-2 in the tournament, including a pair of falls.
