Wrestling Overwhelmed at No. 14 Iowa State

AMES, Iowa – Brad Wukie’s first dual meet of the year was a signature win for the senior as Wukie knocked off No. 9 Tanner Weatherspoon in Penn’s first-ever dual meet visit to No. 14 Iowa State.

Wukie’s win was the lone bright spot for the Quakers in the dual, as the Cyclones took it to the Quakers early in the meet en route to a 41-3 final score.

The first half of the dual was all Cyclones as the hosts won all five first-half bouts to build a 21-0 lead at the break. Penn wasn’t able to change the momentum in the second half, surrendering the first three matches of the second half before Wukie’s win.

Wukie scored the only takedown of the match midway through the second period, taking the lead over Weatherman, a two-time Round of 12 finisher at the NCAA Championships. An escape from Weatherman in the second period evened the match, but Wukie found the winning point with an escape of his own with 1:39 remaining. Wukie would defend nicely in the final minute, staving off a Weatherman shot to secure the win.

For Wukie, a NCAA qualifier last season, the win was his first-ever over a ranked opponent.

No. 3 Kyven Gadson broke open his bout with Canaan Bethea at 197 pounds with seven points in the final 20 seconds off a late inside trip and two sets of backpoints to turn a 6-2 match into a 14-2 major decision. That was one of three major decisions to start the dual as the Quakers fell behind, 12-0.

The first match out of intermission was the only bout of the day between two ranked wrestlers, with No. 12 C.J. Cobb taking on No. 16 Gabe Moreno at 149 pounds. An early takedown from Moreno in the first period knocked Cobb off his gameplan, and C.J. could never recover in a 5-1 loss.

The Quakers will finally make their home dual meet debut for the 2014-15 season, hosting a pair of dual meets against Lock Haven (12 p.m.) and Army (2 p.m.) in The Palestra.
