Wrestling Picked Third in EIWA Preseason Coaches' Poll

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team has been picked third in the EIWA preseason coaches' poll, and three grapplers - Matt Valenti, Matt Dragon and Matt Herrington - have been picked as the best in their respective weight classes.

Penn, ranked 14th in the nation in the preseason USA Today/InterMat/NWCA poll, was picked behind Cornell and Lehigh, just ahead of Ivy League rivals Columbia and Harvard. Penn finished third at the EIWA Championships a year ago, crowning two champions en route to a 12th-place showing at NCAA's.

Individually, defending national champion Matt Valenti was picked first at 133 lbs., Matt Dragon is first at 149 lbs., and All-America Matt Herrington is tops at 174 lbs. Several other Quakers appeared in the individual rankings, including Cesar Grajales at 141 (second), Gene Zannetti at 157 (third), Zach Shannaman at 165 (fourth) and Lior Zamir at 184 (third).

Freshmen were not included in the rankings.

Penn starts its season off on Nov. 12 when it travels to the Michigan State Open.
