Wrestling Places Three at Nittany Lion Open

STATE COLLEGE, PA. – Penn placed three wrestlers in the top six of their respective weight classes Sunday at the Nittany Lion Open at Penn State. Brett McCurdy was fifth at 149 pounds, while Gabriel Burak (157) and Tyler Blakely (Hwt.) each finished sixth in his division.

McCurdy advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Bryce Sadoris Navy, 8-2. He had won three bouts to reach the quarters by a combined score of 38-6. McCurdy then won three consolation matches to finish in fifth place, including a 12-5 decision over Justin Sparrow of The Citadel in the fifth-place match.

Gabe Burak also won three matches to reach the quarterfinals before losing to Joel Ahern of Navy in a close 2-1 decision. Two of Burak’s three wins in the championship bracket came via pinfall. He added a third pin in the wrestlebacks before falling, 8-5 to Jarrett Hostetter of Millersville, 8-5 in the fifth-place bout.

Blakely won two matches in the championship bracket at heavyweight before losing, 2-0, to Rashard Goff of Cleveland State. He then won two bouts in the consolation bracket before Dan Craig of Lock Haven defeated him, 8-4, for fifth place.

In addition to the three placewinners, Zack Ellis (125), Mark Rappo (125), Marty Borowsky (133), Tom Timothy (165) and Cory Beaver (174) each wrestled at Penn State.
