Wrestling Rankings Round-Up: First NCAA Coaches Panel Released

NCAA Coaches Panel

PHILADLEPHIA - Good teams are able to bounce back from difficult outcomes and the Penn wrestling team did just that last weekend, erasing any lingering feelings from a tough loss to Bloomsburg with a pair of wins over Virginia and V.M.I. The Quakers picked up the two wins in very different ways; easily dispatching of V.M.I. by a 33-6 score in the opener before needing a win from freshman heavyweight Kyle Cowan in the final bout against the Cavaliers for an 18-15 win.

The biggest news of the week, however, may be that the first NCAA Coaches' Panel rankings came out, showing where the coaches across the country rank wrestlers. The rankings include 33 wrestlers at each weight - the same amount who will line the field at the NCAA Championships this March in Philadelphia. This panel combines with the official RPI and a wrestler's win-loss percentage to determine automatic bids for each conference. Penn has six wrestlers in the Top 33, including three in the Top 10.
