Wrestling Rankings Round-Up for the Week of 2/2

PHILADELPHIA - With all the rankings in for this week, there was some movement for the Quakers after a 31-12 win at Hofstra over the weekend. Still, Penn begins its Ivy League duals with five wrestlers ranked by InterMat - the second most of any Ivy school and third among EIWA programs.

The InterMat rankings and the A.W.N. polls are the only ones which have changed since last week as the NCAA Coaches' Panel rankings and the EIWA rankings have not been recast since last week.

Penn in the InterMat Rankings (Released 2/2)
Rankings go to 20 in each weight
149 lbs. - No. 9 Cesar Grajales (Last week - No. 9)
157 lbs. - No. 15 Matt Dragon (Last week - No. 15)
165 lbs. - No. 18 Gabriel Burak (Last week - No. 19)
174 lbs. - No. 19 Scott Giffin (Last week - No. 20)
184 lbs. - No. 20 Micah Burak (Last week - No. 19)

Did You Know?
Kind of an interesting week here with three wrestlers moving either up or down. Scott Giffin naturally moved up a spot as he continues his streak of putting up big numbers at 174. His last two matches have resulted in wins via a pin and a tech fall, providing important bonus points for his team. The Burak brothers may have something to discuss amongst themselves this week as Gabriel moved up one spot from No. 19 to No. 18 at 165 lbs. and Micah dropped from No. 19 to No. 20 at 197. The crazy thing is that Micah won his match via fall over the weekend while Gabriel dropped a close 3-2 decision. Micah may have dropped his one spot because of an impressive showing by Rutgers' Lamar Brown over the weekend. Brown went 3-0 including a 14-8 win in a second tiebreaker over then-No. 13 Brent Jones of Virginia. Those three wins propelled Brown into the rankings, all the way to No. 17.

Penn in the A.W.N. Polls (Released 2/2)
Rankings go to 20 in each weight
149 lbs. - No. 12 Cesar Grajales (Last week - No. 13)
174 lbs. - No. 12 Scott Giffin (Last week - No. 12)
184 lbs. - No. 20 Micah Burak (Last week - No. 20)

Did You Know?
Cesar Grajales bumped up a spot after a 13-3 major decision in his first match in over a month. The senior is one of seven wrestlers in their final year who make up the top 12 at this weight. The semifinals of the EIWA Championships in March could be a precursor for All-American matches at NCAAs as four EIWA grapplers are in the top 12. Grajales will not face the three EIWA foes ranked ahead of him until the EIWA Championships as they are not from teams remaining on Penn's dual schedule.

Penn in the NCAA Coaches' Panel (Released 1/21)

133 lbs. - No. 22 Bryan Ortenzio
141 lbs. - No. 26 Zack Kemmerer
149 lbs. - No. 12 Cesar Grajales
157 lbs. - No. 29 Matt Dragon
165 lbs. - No. 20 Gabriel Burak
174 lbs. - No. 20 Scott Giffin
197 lbs. - No. 20 Micah Burak

Did You Know?
Penn has two weights with tough roads ahead in terms of wrestlers featured in the top 33 of the Coaches' Panel. Gabriel Burak is slated to wrestle three men in the top 33 over his final six duals (No. 16 Justin Kerber of Cornell, No. 18 Dennis Galante of Lehigh and No. 29 Eren Civan of Columbia. Penn's starter at 184 - either Cory Beaver or Harrison Cook - will also take on three wrestlers in the top 33 (No. 7 Louis Caputo of Harvard, No. 15 David Craig of Lehigh and No. 17 Steve Bosak of Cornell) before the end of the season.

Did You Know?
Big weekend ahead for a Penn grappler not featured in these rankings, Mark Rappo. The sophomore 125-pounder has a chance to win his way into the top six as he takes on two wrestlers in that group this weekend - No. 4 Greg Einfrank of Brown and No. 6 Steven Keith of Harvard. Rappo has picked up two convincing wins in his last two starts so he enters the weekend with a lot of confidence.
