PHILADELPHIA -
A month into the 2011-12 wrestling season, Penn's wrestling team has made its presence known around the country, with the team and many individuals ranked highly around the country.

The biggest takeaway is that despite a big dual win over EIWA rival No. 14 American, a close loss at the hands of No. 10 Lehigh, four individual tournament wins and two wrestlers undefeated and cruising up the rankings, each member of the Penn Wrestling program is unsatisfied and looking for more as the calendar begins to focus on 2012.

With one dual left before the Midlands Championships on Dec. 29-30, No. 24 Penn hosts No. 13 Maryland on Sunday inside The Palestra at 1 p.m. with one last shot at climbing the rankings before the prestigious tournament in Evanston to close out 2011.

The EIWA rankings haven't been re-released since the preseason, but the next
rankings will be revealed next week. All other polls have been updated weekly throughout the season, but the "Previous" listed is from the preseason. From here on in, this report will be issued weekly.

Summary: While the Quakers have slipped a tad in the team rankings in the first month of the season, that can be attributed to the loss of Mark Rappo at 125 taking away a likely high finisher at NCAAs ... Outside of the NWCA Coaches Poll and the DICW poll which rank based on dual meet strength, the remaining polls calculate possible NCAA Tournament points based on rankings of wrestlers ... Penn has already wrestled No. 10 Lehigh from the NWCA poll, has No. 13 Maryland this weekend and No. 4 Cornell in January ... In addition, Penn has wins over "Receiving Votes" teams American and North Carolina with Hofstra ahead on the docket.

Summary: A busy and interesting weekend for Kemmerer and the rest of the elite at 141 to start December ... Kemmerer went 2-0, improving to 9-0, but dropped in all but one ranking ... Last weekend at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Tournament, defending national champion and national No. 1 Kellen Russell (Michigan) was defeated, as was No. 2 Boris Novachkov of Cal Poly (who lost twice) ... However, except for the InterMat poll, Kemmerer was unable to move ahead of them despite his clean record ... Previous No. 5 Michal Mangrum of Oregon State, who defeated Novachkov and went on to win the Cliff Keen, used those wins to slide ahead for the most part ... Kemmerer has a win in his career over Mangrum, though, and is not lacking for his own signature wins in 2011-12 with decisions over No. 9 Matt Mariarcher of American and No. 15 Evan Henderson of North Carolina.

Micah Burak - 197 Pounds

Summary:
Burak missed the first two weeks of the season while getting healthy, and has only wrestled three complete matches this season ... After starting with an 11-2 major decision and then battling through a 6-3 win in a tiebreaker, Burak was defeated by No. 7 Joe Kennedy of Lehigh over the weekend for the move down ... Things do not get easier for Burak as he will wrestle No. 9 Christian Boley this weekend.

Summary: Penn's biggest climber has been Bryan Ortenzio ... The senior is 14-0 this season, with wins at the Binghamton Open and Keystone Classic ... He has yet to allow an offensive point this season ... Ortenzio is another Penn wrestler who may have been victimized in the rankings by the happenings in Las Vegas as Harvard's Steven Keith jumped over him in many polls with his third-place finish in Vegas .. Ortenzio, however, has a win over Keith this year.

Steve Robertson - 149 pounds

Summary: 11-4 this season with three of those losses coming inside the Top-20, Lorenzo Thomas has navigated a very difficult schedule to this point to lead Penn with four wins by fall ... He will wrestle another tough opponent on Sunday in No. 2 Josh Asper.
