Wrestling Ready For Brute/Binghamton Open

PHILADELPHIA - The college season has arrived for the Penn wrestling team, as the Quakers travel to upstate New York for the Brute/Binghamton Open this weekend. The event will take place Saturday at Johnson City Middle School in Johnson City, N.Y.

Penn begins the season ranked 23rd in the USA Today/Intermat/NWCA National Poll, one of just three Ivy teams to be ranked.

Preliminary rounds will begin at 9:30 a.m. and run continuously throughout the day. Finals in each weight class will begin at 5 p.m.

Penn’s third-year head coach, Zeke Jones, has a relatively inexperienced squad to work with this year, so perhaps it is no surprise to see that he is bringing nearly his entire roster to compete.

“Our men are ready to compete this weekend,” he said. “It gives them an opportunity to compete against someone else other than themselves. This is their first chance to measure themselves against the competition, and find out where they are and what they need to work on.

“There are several conference schools that we will have an opportunity to wrestle,” he continued. “Each time you wrestle against the conference, it has NCAA qualifying implications.”

Indeed, among the teams expected to participate in the event are Ivy/EIWA rivals Cornell and American, as well as Drexel.

Penn’s contingent will undoubtedly be led by 165-pounder Zack Shanaman, an NCAA qualifier last year who is ranked 11th preseason in his weight class. He is one of just two Quaker wrestlers to crack the Top 20 in a weight class in the Intermat preseason rankings (Lior Zamir is the other, ranking 18th at 184 pounds). Another returning wrestler to keep an eye on is sophomore Rollie Peterkin, who took third at the Sunkist Kids Open two weekends ago and will wrestle this weekend at 125 pounds.
