PRINCETON, N.J. – After one day of competition at the 2016 EIWA Championships, the University of Pennsylvania wrestling team sits in sixth place with 43 points. Four Quakers have advanced to the semifinals – May Bethea, Frank Mattiace, Caleb Richardson, and Lorenzo Thomas.
No. 4 seed Lorenzo Thomas has advanced to his third consecutive EIWA semifinal at 184 pounds following a pair of wins. He began his day with a 16-1 technical fall over Army’s Samson Imonode in 6:15, and followed with a 7-0 defeat of Binghamton’s No. 5 seed Steven Schneider. In the quarterfinals, Thomas struggled to get through on his offense, leading just 1-0 after two periods. However, he won a scramble in the final 20 seconds, adding four nearfall for the win.
On Sunday, he will wrestle No. 1 seed Gabe Dean of Cornell – the third consecutive year the two have met at EIWAs. Thomas will be looking for his first win in the all-time series.
In addition to Thomas, a trio of Quakers reached the semifinals with wins over wrestlers who had knocked them off earlier in the season.
No. 5 Caleb Richardson found himself in a familiar situation against No. 4 David Pearce of Drexel in the quarterfinals, trailing 1-0 with time running out. Richardson powered through the defense of Pearce in the final 10 seconds and locked up a cradle, connecting on the takedown and tacking on two backpoints for a 4-1 decision.
Richardson will match up with undefeated No. 1 Nahshon Garrett in the semifinals.
At 157 pounds, No. 5 May Bethea rallied to knock off No. 4 Markus Scheidel of Columbia, 6-5. Bethea trailed. 2-1, after one period but scored twice in the second period. His escape in the third period was the difference in a gutty win.
Up next for Bethea is a semifinal with Cornell’s No. 1 seed Dylan Palacio.
No. 5 seed Frank Mattiace scored a takedown in the first period in his quarterfinal against No. 4 Owen Scott of Cornell, and that was enough for a 3-2 win to reach Sunday’s semifinals. He will take on No. 1 seed Brett Harner of Princeton.
The Quakers went 8-1 in the first round, bolstered by upset wins from Jeremy Schwartz and Marc Mastropietro. Each knocked off the No. 7 seed in their weight class, starting with a comeback win for Schwartz at 125 over Harvard’s Nolan Hellickson. Schwartz forced overtime with a takedown in the final 15 seconds, and he would escape in his tiebreaker period for a 9-8 decision.
Mastropietro trailed No. 7 Nic Gill of Navy, 4-1, after two periods, and put together a takedown and two nearfall in the third period for a 7-4 decision.
Frank Mattiace returned to EIWA action with a 5-1 decision over Sasha Oliinyk of Sacred Heart in the first round, bolstered by two takedowns in the first period. At 157, May Bethea’s tournament started with a 14-4 major decision over Drexel’s Ryan O’Connor. His older brother, Ray, followed with a 7-2 decision over Hofstra’s Bobby Fehr. Caleb Richardson scored bonus points in his first bout with a fall at 4:27 over Sacred Heart’s Tim Johnson.
No. 2 seed Casey Kent had a tough go of it at 174 pounds. After a 5-1 win over Lehigh’s Gordon Wolf to open the day, he suffered two losses and was eliminated from the tournament. His first defeat was a loss by fall to No. 7 seed Rustin Barrick of Bucknell. In the first period, Bucknell secured a headlock and threw Kent to his back for the fall. Kent’s next match was a sudden victory loss to Harvard’s Josef Johnson, 4-2.
