PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania’s wrestling team will make its final road trip of the regular season this weekend, heading to Columbia for a Valentine’s Day date with the Lions at 7 p.m. in University Gym.

The Quakers have won seven in a row against the Lions and 19 of the last 20 meetings. The last loss for the Quakers at the hands of Columbia came in 2007, a 22-12 loss in the Big Apple.

Last year, Penn tamed the Lions, 24-10, in The Palestra. The Quakers won eight of ten bouts, all by decision. The highlight win came from No. 16 Casey Kent over No. 20 Josh Houldsworth at 165 pounds via a 4-2 decision. The Quakers were strong in the tight matches, winning seven of their eight bouts by three points or less. Only Andrew Lenzi had a comfortable win, defeating Ryan Ponte at 149 pounds, 7-2.

The lone rematch on the probable card will come at 184 pounds. No. 5 Lorenzo Thomas defeated Zack Hernandez, 3-1, with a third period takedown the difference. Thomas, a returning All-American, is 20-4 all-time against Ivy League opponents. Hernandez, fourth place at EIWAs last season and a NCAA qualifier, is 9-10 this season.

No. 19 Caleb Richardson leads all Penn wrestlers with 21 wins this season, already nine more than he had all of last campaign. He has won six in a row, including a fall, a technical fall and two major decisions. He is 3-0 against Ivy League opponents in dual meets this season and 5-0 against Ivy foes overall this season – including a 10-3 win over Angelo Amenta, his likely opponent on Saturday.

Brooks Martino is coming off his biggest win of the season, a 2-1 decision in a tiebreaker over No. 20 Justin Staudenmayer of Brown. Tyler Zimmer is listed as his probable opponent for the weekend, and he enters the match with an 11-5 record with five wins by fall. Another Columbia 157-pounder, Markus Sheidel, is 14-3 this season and 6-0 in dual meets. Scheidel was runner-up at EIWAs last season and a NCAA qualifier, but has not competed since January 25.
