PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania has announced its wrestling schedule for the 2006-07 season. The challenging slatewill once again pit the Quakers, who finished 12th at last year's NCAA Championships with a program-record 51 points, against the nation's top programs.
The schedule includes several high profile national tournaments, including the National Duals, Northeast Duals and the Las Vegas Invitational. The Palestra will see plenty of action as well, with the annual Keystone Classic and dual meets with Hofstra, Ivy League foe Harvard and Big 12 competitor Nebraska.
Penn opens with a trip to the Michigan State Open on Nov. 12 before opening at The Palestra with the annual Keystone Classic on Nov. 19, with American, Brown, Rider, Appalachian St., VMI, Duke, Mercyhurst, Boston University and Columbia visitng The Palestra.
The Quakers will then travel to Albany, N.Y. for the Northeast Duals to face 2006 NCAA national runner-up Minnesota, Central Michigan, Bloomsburg and Binghamtonon Nov. 25. The Las Vegas Invitational will finish the fall semester on Dec. 1-2.
The Red and Blue will begin dual meets after the new year with York College at home (Jan. 6) before making the trip to Northern Iowa University for the National Duals on Jan. 13-14. The nation's top programs will participate in the National Duals, including the top five teams from last year's NCAA Championships - Oklahoma State, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Iowa and Cornell.
Penn will return to The Palestra forfive straight matches, starting with Hofstra (Jan. 26), a triple slate with Delaware State, Brown and Drexel (Feb. 2) and finally with Harvard (Feb. 3). Rival Cornell will host the Quakers (Feb. 9) before Penn heads to New York CitytowrestleColumbia (Feb. 10).
The season's home finale on Feb. 17will be part of an unusual home/away split that will see Pennhost Nebraska at 2 p.m. before traveling to Princeton for a 7:30 p.m. start. Regional rival and EIWA power Lehigh will finish the regular season on Feb. 18 in Bethlehem, Pa.
The Quakers will take part in the EIWA Championships at East Stroudsburg on March 3-4 before heading toThe Palace atAuburn Hills in Detroitfor the NCAA Championships on March 15-17.
