Wrestling's Rappo Wins Wilkes Open

Wilkes Open Bracket

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Sophomore Rick Rappo beat three opponents en route to capturing the 141-pound title at the Wilkes Open Thursday. Andrew Coles was also a placewinner, taking third at 165 pounds.

The title is the first of Rappo's career. After a first-round bye, Rappo beat Ryan Goddu of Boston University, 13-9, before taking out Andrew Harrison of Nassau Community College in the semifinals with a 5-2 decision. In the final, Rappo beat BU's Carlo Farrandino, 13-7, avenging a loss he suffered to Farrandino earlier this year at the Keystone Classic.

Coles advanced out of the preliminary round with an 11-8 win over York's Gerald Browne before pinning BU's Alex Brown at 1:15 of their quarterfinal match. Coles dropped a tight semifinal, losing 2-0 to Albert Miles of Pitt-Johnstown, but the Penn sophomore came back to win a pair of matches in the consolation bracket to take third, both by 2-1 scorelines - first again over Browne, and then against Franklin & Marshall's Justin Herbert.

Also in action for the Quakers were Vince Cina, who went 2-2 in his season debut at 149 lbs., Dan Zander, who went 2-2 at 174 lbs., and Matt Dwyer, who was 1-2 at 197 lbs.

The 14th-ranked Quakersreturn to dual-meet action Jan. 6 against York College at The Palestra.
