PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s cross country squads were both named USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams for the 2015 season. In addition, Ashley Montgomery on the women’s side and Brendan Smith of the men each earned USTFCCCA Scholar-Athlete honors.
The men’s team finished with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.36, and stood as one of 171 squads honored. The women were amongst 205 teams to earn the distinction, and posted a GPA of 3.32.
Individually, Smith and Montgomery were honored due to registering a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and finishing within the top 25 at NCAA Regionals. Montgomery placed fifth in the regional to earn a berth into her first-ever NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky. Smith finished 15th at the Mid-Atlantic Regional, and was part of a men’s team that achieved a slot in the championships for the first time since 1975.
Smith and Montgomery will both be in action this weekend, competing with the indoor track and field team at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships in Ithaca, N.Y.
