PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania cross country teams will make their second appearance of the fall on Friday, running in the Main Line Invitational at Haverford College. Nine women’s teams and eight men’s squads will embark on the Alumni Cross Country Course, with races set for 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
The women’s squad will enter Friday fresh off capturing the Big 5 championship last weekend. Led by Ashley Montgomery (14:15.3), Cleo Whiting (14:15.4), Clarissa Whiting (14:15.6) and Abby Hong (14:15.7), who all finished within four-tenths of a second of each other, the Quakers took home their second-consecutive city title. Senior captain Amy Darlington also scored for the Quakers, finishing ninth with a time of 14:32.2.
On the men’s side, the Quakers recorded five of the top 17 times on the way to a second-place showing at last weekend’s Big 5. Sophomore Patrick Hally led the way with an eighth-place finish and a mark of 19:14.9. Senior Clark Shurtleff and freshman Kurt Convey crossed the finish line right behind Hally, clocking identical times of 19:15.1. Convey registered the fastest time of any freshman in the field. Junior Chris Hatler placed 11th, rounding the course in 19:18.1. Senior Keaton Naff was the final scorer for Penn, finishing 17th with a mark of 19:22.9.
While there were no team scores at last season’s Main Line Invitational, the Red and Blue recorded strong showings on both sides. The women put together a 2-3-4-5-6 finish from their top-five runners, while the men finished 3-6-7-8-11.
