PHILADELPHIA - Four men and three women were officially announced as captains of the University of Pennsylvania men's and women's cross country/track & field teams on Monday. Tom Awad, Sam Mattis, Tom Pitt, Tom Timmins, Amy Darlington, Heather Bong and Kelsey Hay were selected to lead the Quakers in 2014-15.
Awad and Darlington will serve as captains of the men's and women's cross country teams, respectively. Awad was the first Quakers since 2005 to reach the NCAA Cross Country Championships last season and earned all-region honors. Darlington is a two-year letterwinner and ranked fourth all-time at Penn in the steeplechase.
The men's track and field team will be guided by Mattis, Pitt and Timmins. All three qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships as underclassmen last season. Mattis was a first-team All-American and holds the school record in the discus, while Pitt (high jump) and Timmins (400-meter hurdles) each rank among the top-10 all-time at Penn in their respective events.
Bong and Hay will serve as leaders for the women's track and field team. Bong ranks among the top five all-time at Penn in three events and held the honor as the fastest woman in school history prior to teammate Lydia Ali. Hay earned honorable mention honors in the javelin at the NCAA Championships in May and holds the school record in the event.
Cross country season begins on Sept. 12 for the Quakers when they host the Big 5 Invitational at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia's scenic Fairmount Park.
