PHILADELPHIA - As the cross country season quickly approaches, Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Steve Dolan officially announced the 2015-16 team captains on Monday. Thomas Awad, Amy Darlington, Sam Mattis, Thomas Pitt, Kelsey Hay, Carey Celata and Taylor Hennig will lead the Quakers next season.
Darlington and Awad will captain the women's and men's cross country teams, respectively, for the second straight season. Darlington scored at cross country Heps and Regionals, and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the steeplechase. Awad earned Penn's first individual Heptagonal cross country title in 40 years and became the school's first cross country All-American since 2002, en route to two indoor and two outdoor Heps titles.
Mattis and Pitt also served as captains last year. Mattis claimed the program's first-ever national championship in the discus, set the school record in the event and won the Heps title for the third consecutive year. Pitt earned second-team All-Ivy honors during the outdoor season (high jump) and reached the NCAA Championships for the second straight season.
Celata and Hennig are first-time captains, while Hay was also re-elected to the captaincy. Celata had a breakout year in 2014 as she won the ECAC championship (4x800), set a school record (SMR), and qualified for the NCAA Championships (800 meters). Hennig was also part of that school record and scored twice at Indoor and Outdoor Heps. Meanwhile, Hay continued on a path as one of the program's all-time greats with another Heps title, Heps record and All-America honor in the javelin.
The Quakers will begin cross country season on their home course in Fairmount Park. Penn hosts the Big 5 Invitational on Sept. 11 at Belmont Plateau.
