Xu Takes USFA National Wheelchair Title, Foil-Epee

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – This past weekend, University of Pennsylvania sophomore fencer David Xu competed in the USFA National Wheelchair Championships at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Competing in all three weapons, Xu took the title of champion in both foil and epee and finished tied for third in sabre. On his path to the foil title, Xu defeated four-time Paralympian Gerard Moreno, 15-6, in the final round.

Xu, who fences with a prosthetic leg for Penn, fenced epee this season and won five of his 10 bouts in which he competed. His wins include victories over opponents from UNC, Drew, Haverford, NJIT, and Lafayette.

Last year, Xu competed in the wheelchair division of the 2012 North American Cup, winning silver medals in foil and sabre and a bronze in epee.

With his finishes, Xu will attend the Paralympic World Cup in Montreal in hopes to qualify for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio.
