PHILADELPHIA – Freshman foilist Zane Grodman has been selected to join eight of his teammates – including four on the men’s side – at the 2009 NCAA Fencing Championships. Grodman earned an at-large selection based on his performance over the regular season and at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional.
Grodman finished 12th at the Regional and was ranked 12th in the region after the season. He is the second Penn men’s foil fencer to gain admission to the NCAA Championship. He will join classmate Vidur Kapur who qualified automatically last weekend at the Mid-Atlantic Regional.
The three other men’s fencers slated to fence for the NCAA’s highest honor include senior captain Ben Wieder in epee and Jonathan Berkowsky and Andrew Bielen in sabre.
In women’s fencing, four fencers have been awarded automatic berths in the NCAA Championships.
Stephanie Wheeler will compete in epee and Laura Paragano will fence in foil. In sabre, two fencers will represent the Red and Blue – Dominika Franciskowicz and Danielle Kamis.
